Stony Peaks biome in Minecraft

Stony Peaks are the warm mountain tops of the Overworld: bare grey stone streaked with bands of white calcite, with no snow and no trees. They form where the climate is too warm for Jagged or Frozen Peaks. Nothing grazes here, but the rock holds ore and the summits make striking build sites.

Structures in the Stony Peaks

Stone and calcite

The whole surface is stone, cut by thin bands of calcite that run across the slopes. Calcite is a soft white block that drops itself with any pickaxe, which makes it a handy decorative stone for builders. Because the biome is warm, rain falls instead of snow and the peaks stay grey. Snow-covered summits belong to the Jagged Peaks and Frozen Peaks.

No animals, plenty of ore

No passive animal spawns in Stony Peaks: no goats, no sheep, no rabbits. At night you only meet the usual hostile mobs. Inside, the mountain holds emerald ore, which only generates in mountain and windswept biomes, along with the usual coal, iron and copper. Watch out for infested stone: a silverfish jumps out when you mine it, and with Silk Touch you only get plain stone. Since the surface is already bare rock, you can tunnel straight into the side of the peak.

Building and exploring

Bare stone means solid footing and no powder snow traps, unlike the snowy peaks. With cobblestone everywhere, Stony Peaks are a good spot for a mountain base. Pillager outposts and mountain ruined portals can generate here. In the game files, Stony Peaks belong to the same mountain group as the Meadow, Snowy Slopes and the other peaks, so these biomes are often close by.
