Snowy Slopes biome in Minecraft
Snowy Slopes are the steep, snow-covered mountainsides that lead up to the peaks. Goats leap between the ledges, powder snow hides in the surface and lava sometimes leaks out of the snow. It is a hard place to cross early in a world, but the stone below holds emerald ore and the slopes can even hide an igloo.

What you find on Snowy Slopes
The surface is made of snow blocks and patches of powder snow. Where the slope gets too steep, bare stone shows through. No trees grow here, and the only animals are goats and white rabbits. An igloo can generate on the slopes, and so can a pillager outpost. Fire also burns out faster here than in most biomes.
Goats and their horns
Goats jump high and ram players and mobs, sometimes right off a ledge. When a goat rams stone, packed ice, a log or certain ores instead of you, it can drop a goat horn. Stand in front of a stone wall, let the goat charge and step aside at the last moment. Goats drop nothing when killed, but you can milk them with a bucket.
Climbing safely
- Wear leather boots so powder snow carries you instead of swallowing you. Any leather armor piece also protects you from freezing.
- Watch for lava: small lava springs can pour out of snow and powder snow on these slopes.
- Carry blocks to bridge gaps and a water bucket to break a long fall.
- Dig in for ores: the mountain hides emerald ore, which only generates in mountain and windswept biomes, and infested stone full of silverfish.
Snowy Slopes often border a Grove or a meadow below and lead up to the snowy peaks. Climb them to reach the highest ground.
