Snowy Plains biome in Minecraft
Snowy Plains are wide, flat stretches of snow-covered grass with only a rare spruce here and there. Water freezes, snow piles up during storms and strays replace most skeletons at night. It is also the only biome where snowy villages generate, which makes it a cold but workable place to start a world.

Structures in the Snowy Plains
What Snowy Plains look like
The ground is ordinary grass under a thin layer of snow, so it stays flat and easy to build on. Trees are rare: most chunks have none, and the few that grow are spruces, sometimes with a fallen trunk lying next to them. Lakes and rivers freeze over and snow keeps piling up during storms. Breaking snow gives snowballs, and four snowballs craft a Snow Block. Ice Spikes is a variant of this biome, and frozen rivers often cut through it.
Villages, igloos and outposts
Snowy Plains is the only biome with snowy villages, a welcome source of beds, food and trades in a biome with little wood. You can also stumble on an Igloo, whose basement may hide a zombie villager to cure, and on pillager outposts, which stand out from far away on the flat white ground.
Surviving the cold nights
The cold itself never hurts you: only Powder Snow freezes players, and it does not form on the surface here. The real threat is the Stray, a skeleton variant that takes the place of most skeletons in this biome and shoots arrows of Slowness. Fight strays from cover or behind a shield. In daylight, watch the polar bears: they are neutral, but adults turn hostile if you get close to a cub.
- Build a Snow Golem from two snow blocks and a carved pumpkin. It throws snowballs at hostile mobs and never melts in this cold.
- Rabbits are the main source of meat, and their fur here is white or black and white.
