Release Java Edition Major update

Minecraft 1.17 “Caves & Cliffs: Part I”

Released on 8 June 2021, Minecraft Java Edition 1.17 Caves & Cliffs: Part I adds three mobs (the Axolotl, the Goat and the Glow Squid), copper, amethyst geodes, deepslate, powder snow and the Spyglass. It is the first version that requires Java 16 and OpenGL 3.2.

Released 08 Jun 2021 149 new blocks & items Resource pack format 7 Data version 2724

Key takeaways

  • New mobs: the Axolotl hunts in underground water, the Goat rams players and sends them flying, and the Glow Squid drops Glow Ink Sacs.
  • Copper: a new ore whose blocks oxidise to green over time, unless they are waxed with Honeycomb. It also crafts the Lightning Rod.
  • Amethyst: geodes hold Budding Amethyst, whose shards craft the Spyglass and Tinted Glass.
  • Raw ores: iron, copper and gold ores now drop raw metal to smelt, and every ore except diamond has a new texture.
  • New blocks: Deepslate in the lower layers of new chunks, Powder Snow, Candles, Glow Lichen, Pointed Dripstone and lush cave plants.

Headline features

The changes you will notice first, with the pages that go deeper.

Mob

Axolotl, Goat and Glow Squid

Axolotls and Glow Squid spawn in underground water and can be bred or caught in a bucket for the Axolotl. Goats spawn in newly generated mountains and ram anything in their way.

Blocks

Copper and the Lightning Rod

Copper blocks pass through several oxidation stages, and Honeycomb stops the process. A Lightning Rod attracts nearby lightning strikes and gives a redstone signal when hit.

Items

Amethyst and the Spyglass

Amethyst geodes generate in new chunks. Amethyst Shards and Copper Ingots craft the Spyglass, which zooms in on distant things, and shards also make Tinted Glass.

Blocks

Powder Snow and Candles

Players and mobs that sink into Powder Snow start to freeze, while Leather Boots let you walk on top of it. Candles can be dyed and placed up to four per block.

Minecraft 1.17 FAQ

When was Minecraft 1.17 released?

On 8 June 2021, for Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. It is Caves & Cliffs: Part I, and the 1.17.1 update followed on 6 July 2021.

Which Java version does Minecraft 1.17 need?

Java 16, a jump from Java 8 in 1.16. The Minecraft Launcher installs it automatically, but a dedicated server or a third-party launcher needs Java 16 or above. The graphics card must also support OpenGL 3.2.

Are the new caves and the Warden in 1.17?

No. The new cave and mountain generation came with Part II in 1.18 (30 November 2021), and the Warden and the Deep Dark were moved to 1.19 The Wild Update.

Do goats and geodes appear in old worlds updated to 1.17?

Only in newly generated chunks. Goats need new mountain chunks, and Deepslate, geodes and Glow Lichen do not appear in areas already explored. Axolotls and Glow Squid also spawn in existing underground water.
