Pick two or three blocks of close colors, add one with a different texture, and use the right placement trick. Below are 10 floors and 10 walls with the exact blocks, all available in survival in Java Edition 26.3; most work the same way on Bedrock Edition.

Learn the three placement rules

  • Logs follow the face you click. Click the top of a block for an upright log, the side of a block for a log lying in that direction. To lay the first log of a floor flat, place it against a temporary block.
  • Glazed Terracotta faces you. Its pattern points the opposite way of where you look. Turn 90 degrees between two blocks to rotate the design.
  • Stairs, slabs and trapdoors take the half you click. Click the upper half of a block side, or the underside of a block, and they go to the top half: that is how you get upside-down stairs.

Floors 1 to 4: wood

1. Stripes with a border

Fill the room with Spruce Planks and make every third row Dark Oak Planks. Frame the room with Stripped Dark Oak Log laid flat along the walls.

2. Herringbone

Lay Stripped Oak Log flat in pairs: two pointing north-south, then two pointing east-west, and shift the pattern by one block on each new row. The bark-free sides look like real wood strips.

3. Parquet squares

Alternate 2 by 2 squares of Oak Planks and 2 by 2 squares of Stripped Oak Log laid flat, turning the logs 90 degrees from one square to the next.

4. Bamboo mat

Bamboo Mosaic (2 Bamboo Slabs on top of each other) has a woven texture. Fill the middle with it and frame it with Bamboo Planks.

Floors 5 to 7: stone and tile

5. Checkerboard

Alternate Polished Diorite and Polished Deepslate. The strong contrast suits halls and kitchens; frame it with Smooth Stone so the pattern stops cleanly at the walls.

6. Tiles with joints

Lay Stone Bricks and put a Chiseled Stone Bricks block (2 Stone Brick Slabs on top of each other) every 4 blocks in both directions, like the joints of large tiles.

7. Glazed terracotta pinwheel

Place 4 Light Blue Glazed Terracotta in a 2 by 2 square, turning 90 degrees before each one: facing north, east, south, then west. Repeat the 2 by 2 block across the floor. Every color has its own pattern, so try a few before you commit.

Floors 8 to 10: aged and natural

8. Copper patina

Cut Copper (4 Blocks of Copper give 4) slowly oxidizes through four stages: Cut Copper, Exposed, Weathered, Oxidized. Mix the stages for a patina, then use Honeycomb on each block to wax it and freeze the color. An Axe scrapes off one stage of oxidation, or the wax.

9. Worn deepslate

Lay Deepslate Tiles and scatter Cracked Deepslate Tiles (smelt Deepslate Tiles in a Furnace) where people walk most. Edge the room with Polished Deepslate.

10. Garden path

Use a shovel on Grass Blocks to make Dirt Path, then edge it with Coarse Dirt and Moss Block. A solid block placed on top of a Dirt Path turns it back into Dirt, so keep the path clear.

Walls 11 to 13: frame and fill

11. Timber frame

Put upright Stripped Spruce Log posts every 4 blocks and lay logs flat between them at floor and ceiling height. Fill the panels with Calcite for a plastered look.

12. Stone base, wood top

Build the first 2 rows in Cobblestone, add a ledge of upside-down Stone Brick Stairs, then finish the wall in Spruce Planks. The heavy base makes the building look grounded.

13. Bricks with sandstone trim

Build in Bricks, frame doors and windows with Smooth Sandstone and cap the wall with a row of Cut Sandstone Slab.

Walls 14 to 16: add depth

14. Recessed panels

Let the posts or pillars stick out 1 block and set the wall panels between them 1 block back. The shadow does the rest, whatever the blocks.

15. Window sills

Under each window, put a row of upside-down Spruce Stairs facing out as a sill, and a Spruce Slab in the top half above the window as a lintel.

16. Trapdoor shutters

Place Spruce Trapdoors on the wall on both sides of a window, then use them to open them flat against the wall. They look like shutters and do not block the light.

Walls 17 to 20: gradients and accents

17. Weathered stone

Build in Stone Bricks, then swap in Mossy Stone Bricks (Stone Bricks with a Moss Block or Vines) and Cracked Stone Bricks (smelted Stone Bricks), more of them near the ground and fewer toward the top.

18. Deepslate gradient

Cobbled Deepslate at the bottom, Deepslate Bricks in the middle, Deepslate Tiles at the top. The texture gets finer as the wall rises, which makes it look taller.

19. Terracotta bands

Stack horizontal stripes of Terracotta, Orange Terracotta and White Terracotta of uneven heights, like the cliffs of the Badlands.

20. Tuff with built-in light

Build in Polished Tuff with a band of Tuff Bricks and a Chiseled Tuff block every few blocks. Replace some of them with Ochre Froglight: light level 15 inside the wall, no torches needed. Froglights appear when a frog eats a small Magma Cube.

FAQ

How do I place logs sideways?

Click the side of a block. A log takes the axis of the face you click: the top of a block gives an upright log, a side gives a log lying toward you.

How do I rotate glazed terracotta?

Turn yourself. The block's pattern faces the opposite of the direction you look when you place it, so four blocks placed while facing north, east, south and west make a pinwheel.

How do I stop copper from turning green?

Use Honeycomb on the block to wax it. Waxed copper keeps its current color; an Axe removes the wax again.

What blocks make a floor look less flat?

Mix two textures of the same color, such as Stone Bricks and Chiseled Stone Bricks, or Deepslate Tiles and Cracked Deepslate Tiles, and add a border in a darker block.
