How to build an automatic sugar cane farm in Minecraft
hoppers at the bottom, rails above them, dirt on top.

Dirt is the plain soil under the grass, ready to be tilled, flattened or turned into mud. Soil blocks form the ground that plants, trees and crops grow on.
It is mined with a shovel.
Most soils break fast with a shovel and drop dirt, with Silk Touch needed to keep grass, podzol or mycelium. A hoe tills grass and dirt into Farmland, and a shovel flattens them into a Dirt Path. Saplings, flowers and sugar cane need soil to be planted on.
Grass and mycelium spread to neighboring dirt, so a single block can slowly cover a whole area. Different biomes show different soils, which helps you recognize where you are.
