Farmland block in Minecraft
Farmland is tilled with a hoe; within four blocks of water it stays moist for crops, and jumping on it tramples it back to dirt. Soil blocks form the ground that plants, trees and crops grow on. All soils work in a similar way; the Dirt page explains them.
It is mined with a shovel and drops Dirt.
