How to install Fabric

Pick the right installer
On Windows, take the .exe: it runs on the Java that comes with the Minecraft Launcher. On macOS and Linux, take the universal .jar, which needs Java on your computer (Minecraft 26.3 uses Java 25).

Run the Fabric installer
Close the Minecraft Launcher first. In the installer, stay on the Client tab, choose 26.3 under Minecraft Version and keep the suggested Loader Version. Leave Create profile ticked and click Install. If macOS blocks the file, open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

Start the Fabric profile once
Open the Minecraft Launcher, choose the new installation whose name starts with fabric-loader in the menu next to Play, and click Play. This first start creates the mods folder. Quit the game.

Add Fabric API and your mods
Put the mod files (.jar, never unzipped) in the mods folder: %appdata%\.minecraft\mods on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods on macOS, ~/.minecraft/mods on Linux. Most Fabric mods need Fabric API: add the file made for Minecraft 26.3, then restart the game.

Compatibility and differences

Most Fabric mods depend on Fabric API, a separate mod. Add it once per installation, in the version that matches your game.
One Fabric Loader version works for every supported Minecraft version. What must match is each mod: a file made for one Minecraft version usually fails on another.
Fabric runs Fabric mods only. Forge and NeoForge mods need their own loader, and one installation runs one loader.
Sodium and Iris, the usual pair for FPS and shaders, both have Fabric versions. OptiFine does not support Fabric officially.

Is Fabric available for Minecraft 26.3?

Yes. Fabric Loader 0.20.1 supports Minecraft 26.3. Each mod still needs a file made for 26.3.

Do I need Fabric API?

For most mods, yes. Fabric API is a library that many Fabric mods depend on. Put the file for your Minecraft version in the mods folder next to them; the mod page lists it under its dependencies.

Can Fabric run Forge or NeoForge mods?

No. Each mod is built for one loader. Fabric loads Fabric mods only, so look for the Fabric file of a mod or use the loader it was made for.
