How to install NeoForge

Install Java 25
The NeoForge installer is a .jar file and needs Java on your computer: the Java inside the Minecraft Launcher is not enough. Minecraft 26.3 uses Java 25; Eclipse Temurin is a free build.

Download the installer
Close the Minecraft Launcher, then download the installer for Minecraft 26.3 with the button above. The file is named neoforge-26.3.0.101-installer.jar and is always a .jar, never an .exe.

Run it with Install client
Double-click the file, keep Install client selected and click Proceed. If it opens in an archive tool instead, open a terminal in the download folder and run java -jar neoforge-26.3.0.101-installer.jar.

Create a separate installation
NeoForge recommends keeping mods apart from the vanilla game. In the launcher, open Installations, click New installation, choose the NeoForge version, set the Game directory to an empty folder outside .minecraft and click Create. Start it once to the title screen: the game creates the mods folder.

Add your mods
Put NeoForge mod files (.jar) in the mods folder of that game directory. Each one must be made for NeoForge and Minecraft 26.3. To update NeoForge later, run a newer installer and change the version of the installation.

For a server, choose Install server in the same installer and pick an empty folder; the server then starts with run.bat or run.sh.

Compatibility and differences

NeoForge is a fork of Forge, started in July 2023 by most of the Forge team. Since Minecraft 1.20.2, the two have their own code, versions and mods.
NeoForge refuses Forge and Fabric mod files and lists them on its error screen. Download the NeoForge file of each mod.
Its version numbers follow Minecraft: 26.3.0.x is for Minecraft 26.3, 21.1.x for Minecraft 1.21.1.
For Minecraft 1.20.1, NeoForge itself recommends Forge, which supported that version for longer.
On Blockaria, 195 mods have a NeoForge file for Minecraft 26.3 and 45 a Forge file.

What is the difference between NeoForge and Forge?

NeoForge started as a fork of Forge in July 2023, when most of the Forge team moved to the new project. Both are mod loaders, but since 1.20.2 their mods are not interchangeable: pick the loader your mods are made for.

Can I use Forge or Fabric mods on NeoForge?

No. NeoForge stops on an error screen that names the files made for another loader. Download the NeoForge version of each mod.

Why does the NeoForge installer not open?

Java is missing, or .jar files open with another program. Install Java 25, then run java -jar followed by the file name in a terminal.
