Where to find diamonds in Minecraft: the best Y level
Below Y 0, the underground is Deepslate (stone and deepslate mix between Y 0 and Y 8), so most of your finds will be Deepslate Diamond Ore.

Deepslate is the dark stone that replaces ordinary stone in the lowest layers of the Overworld, down to the bedrock. It is twice as hard as stone, so mining through it takes longer.
It is obtained in the Furnace from Cobbled Deepslate. It is mined with a pickaxe and drops Cobbled Deepslate.
Mined with a pickaxe, deepslate drops Cobbled Deepslate; only Silk Touch keeps the block itself, and smelting cobbled deepslate gives it back. Like a log, it has a direction: it lies along the axis of the face you place it on.
Ores in this layer have deepslate versions, such as deepslate diamond ore and deepslate iron ore. They hold the same resources but are slower to break. Ancient cities are built out of the deepslate family, and infested deepslate can hide a silverfish.
With a Stonecutter or the crafting table, deepslate and its cobbled form lead to Polished Deepslate, deepslate bricks, tiles and chiseled deepslate, a dark palette popular for modern and gothic builds.
Cobbled Deepslate → Deepslate
// Slots with several items cycle through every accepted option.
Below Y 0, the underground is Deepslate (stone and deepslate mix between Y 0 and Y 8), so most of your finds will be Deepslate Diamond Ore.
Sea level is Y 63, Bedrock covers Y -64 to -60, and Deepslate replaces Stone below Y 0.
Stone and deepslate break much faster.

In a Furnace: 1 × Cobbled Deepslate gives 1 × Deepslate. Mined with Silk Touch, the block drops itself; without it, it drops Cobbled Deepslate.
It is the deep stone of the Overworld, drops cobbled deepslate and is the base of the deepslate building blocks. It is an ingredient in 17 recipes, made at the Stonecutter; for example Cobbled Deepslate Stairs, Cobbled Deepslate Wall, Deepslate Brick Slab, Deepslate Brick Stairs, Deepslate Brick Wall and 9 more.
The fastest tool is the pickaxe.
Placed under a Note Block, Deepslate gives the Bass drum sound.
