How to install OptiFine

1. 01

   Start the matching Minecraft version once

   The installer copies files from the vanilla game. In the Minecraft Launcher, create an installation for the same version as your OptiFine file (Installations > New installation) and start it once to the title screen. The installer is a .jar file and needs Java on your computer: Minecraft 26.2 uses Java 25.

   Download OptiFine from optifine.net

   Use the button above, or click Download next to your build on optifine.net/downloads. That button goes through an ad page (adfoc.us): wait a few seconds and click Skip. The Mirror link opens the official file page directly. The file is named like preview_OptiFine_26.2_HD_U_K2_pre5.jar.

   Run the installer and click Install

   Double-click the .jar. A small window shows your Minecraft folder and three buttons: Install, Extract and Exit. Click Install: OptiFine adds its own installation to the launcher. If the file opens in an archive tool instead, run java -jar preview_OptiFine_26.2_HD_U_K2_pre5.jar in a terminal.

   Pick the OptiFine installation

   Restart the launcher, choose the new OptiFine entry in the menu next to Play and click Play. In the game, Options > Video Settings now has extra pages such as Details, Quality, Performance and Shaders.

   Add a shader pack

   Download a shader pack as a .zip and keep it zipped. Open Options > Video Settings > Shaders, click Shaders Folder and drop the .zip into the shaderpacks folder, then pick the pack in the list and click Done.

Fix the usual problems

• Nothing happens on double-click: Java is missing or .jar files open with another program. Install Java or use the java -jar command.
• The installer reports a missing version: start the vanilla version of the same number once, then run it again.
• No Shaders button: you started the vanilla installation. Pick the OptiFine one.
• Flickering chunks: the OptiFine FAQ suggests turning off Threaded Optimization (or OpenGL Threading) in your graphics driver settings.

OptiFine with Forge or Fabric

With Forge, do not click Install. Put the OptiFine .jar in the mods folder of a Forge installation that uses the Forge build listed for your version in the table above. The newest OptiFine build tested with Forge is OptiFine HD U J9 for Minecraft 1.21.11 (Forge 61.0.8).

OptiFine has no official Fabric or NeoForge support. On those loaders, Sodium (performance) and Iris (shaders) do the same job, and Iris loads most OptiFine shader packs.

OptiFine or Iris?

OptiFine is a single all-in-one mod that also runs with Forge. Iris runs on Fabric and NeoForge, is usually faster with Sodium, and supports new Minecraft versions sooner.
