How to make and use maps in Minecraft
Put 8 Paper around a Compass in a crafting table.

The Compass points to the world spawn, the place where new players first appear. It is also needed to craft maps and, linked to a Lodestone, it can point to any place you choose.
It is made with the Crafting Table from 4 × Iron Ingot and Redstone Dust.
Its needle always turns toward the world spawn in the Overworld. In the Nether and the End, it spins without direction.
Use it on a Lodestone to make it point to that block instead, in any dimension. Combined with Echo Shards, it becomes a Recovery Compass, which points to the place where you last died.
Surrounded by eight sheets of Paper, it becomes an Empty Map.
