Nether Fossil structure in Minecraft

Nether Fossils are giant skeleton remains made only of Bone Blocks, scattered across Soul Sand Valleys. They hold no chest and no mob: they are a landmark and the easiest source of bone meal in the Nether.

Where Nether Fossils generate
Fossils only appear in the Soul Sand Valley, and they are very common there: the game tries to place one in every 2 × 2 chunk area of the biome. Each fossil picks a random height between Y 32 and the top of the Nether, then drops down to the first solid floor with open air above it. You find them on the valley floor, on ledges and in side caverns, but never below the level of the lava sea.
The ground is reshaped around their base, so many fossils look half sunk into Soul Sand or Soul Soil. If /locate points at a spot that looks empty, check the cavern below or above you.
What a Nether Fossil looks like
There are 14 shapes, from a short column of a few bones to skeleton pieces about seven blocks across. They are built only from Bone Blocks. Unlike the fossils buried in the Overworld, which can carry coal or diamond ore, Nether fossils hold no ore, no chest and no spawner. The only extra is a Dried Ghast block that sometimes sits at the foot of one.
What to do with a Nether Fossil
/execute in minecraft:the_nether run tp @s -119.5 91 -137.5 25 -8- Mine it for bone meal. Break the Bone Blocks with a pickaxe; each one crafts into nine Bone Meal. In the Nether, bone meal grows fungi and roots on Crimson Nylium and Warped Nylium, handy for a fungus farm or a quick wood supply.
- Use it as a landmark. Pale bones stand out against the blue-green fog of the valley and help you find your way back to a portal.
- Build with it. Bone Blocks make a good pillar or trim for a Nether base.
Dangers of the Soul Sand Valley
The fossil itself is harmless, but its biome is not. Skeletons shoot from the fog, Ghasts fire explosive fireballs across the open valley, and Endermen wander between the basalt pillars. Striders walk on the lava lakes and are the only peaceful mob around. Soul Sand slows you down: boots enchanted with Soul Speed turn it into a fast lane instead. The same valley can also hold a Nether Fortress or a Bastion Remnant, which are worth far more of your time.

Nether Fossil — FAQ
Do Nether Fossils have any loot?
No. They have no chest and no spawner. The only thing to take is the Bone Blocks themselves.
How much bone meal does a Nether Fossil give?
Each Bone Block crafts into nine Bone Meal. The largest fossils have a little over two dozen blocks, a small one only a handful.
Are Nether Fossils the same as Overworld fossils?
No. Overworld fossils are buried underground and can include coal or diamond ore. Nether fossils stand in the open in Soul Sand Valleys and are made of Bone Blocks, sometimes with a Dried Ghast at their foot.
How do you find a Nether Fossil?
Use /locate structure minecraft:nether_fossil with cheats on, or look in Soul Sand Valley.
