Lapis Lazuli is the blue gem that pays for enchanting: every enchantment on an enchanting table costs one to three pieces on top of experience levels. Lapis ore gives four to nine pieces per block, so a few veins last a long time.
It is made with the Crafting Table from Block of Lapis Lazuli (other recipes also exist).
What it does
On an Enchanting Table, the three offers cost one, two and three lapis, plus the same number of experience levels. Lapis goes in its own slot next to the item, and what is left returns to your inventory when you close the table.
Crafted on its own, lapis gives Blue Dye, the main source of blue for wool, glass and banners. Nine pieces pack into a Block of Lapis Lazuli, and lapis is also one of the armor trim colors.
Mining lapis ore with Fortune gives even more. An apprentice Cleric sells lapis for emeralds, and village temples and shipwrecks hold some in their chests.
