An enchanting table offers level 30 enchantments only with 15 bookshelves around it, placed by exact rules. Here is the layout, the full material list and how to reroll bad offers in Java Edition 26.3.
Gather the materials
- Enchanting Table: 1 Book, 2 Diamonds and 4 Obsidian (Obsidian needs a diamond or netherite pickaxe).
- Bookshelf: 6 planks of any wood and 3 Books. 15 shelves take 90 planks and 45 books.
- Book: 3 Paper and 1 Leather. 3 Sugar Cane make 3 Paper.
The whole setup needs 46 books, so 138 Sugar Cane and 46 Leather. A cow farm and a sugar cane farm pay off quickly. The calculator on this page breaks everything down into raw materials. Shortcut: a novice Librarian sells a Bookshelf for 9 emeralds.
Place the enchanting table
Pick a spot with at least 5 by 5 free blocks, the table in the center. If you ever move the setup, mine the shelves with a Silk Touch tool: without it, a Bookshelf drops 3 books instead of itself.
Build the bookshelf ring
Each Bookshelf counts only if it is exactly 2 blocks away from the table on one axis (leaving a one-block gap) and at most 2 blocks on the other axis. It must sit at the same height as the table or one block higher. That gives a 5 by 5 ring with 16 spots per layer: fill 15 and leave one open as the entrance.

Keep the gap empty
The block between the table and each shelf, at the shelf's height, must let the power through. In Java Edition 26.3 that is the enchantment_power_transmitter block tag, which contains replaceable blocks only: air, Snow layers, Short Grass, water and similar. A Torch, a carpet, a slab or any solid block in the gap switches that shelf off. If you use the upper row, keep the gap clear one block above the table level too. Bedrock Edition is stricter: both the block at table height and the one above it must be air.
Check: glyph particles flying from the shelves are not proof, they also fly from blocked shelves. The real test is the bottom option showing 30.
Enchant at level 30
Put the item and up to 3 Lapis Lazuli in the table. The three options cost 1, 2 and 3 lapis and the same number of levels. With 15 bookshelves the bottom option always requires level 30: you need 30 levels to pick it, but it only takes 3 levels and 3 lapis. Hovering over an option shows one of the enchantments you will get, not all of them. The item must be unenchanted; a Book becomes an Enchanted Book.
Reroll the offers
The offers come from a personal enchanting seed that changes only after you enchant something. Closing the table, breaking it or waiting changes nothing. To get new offers:
- Check your other items first: the same seed shows different offers for a sword, a pickaxe or a book.
- If none fits, enchant a cheap item (a Book or a Wooden Shovel) with the top option. That costs 1 level and 1 lapis and rolls a new seed for everything.
- Got a bad result anyway? A Grindstone removes the enchantments and gives some experience back.
FAQ
Do chiseled bookshelves work for an enchanting table?
No. Only the regular bookshelf is in the enchantment power tag. Chiseled bookshelves store books but add no enchanting power.
Why does my enchanting table not reach level 30?
Count the active shelves: one shelf too close, too far, two blocks higher or blocked by a torch or carpet in the gap drops you below 15. Also check that you have at least 30 levels.
Do more than 15 bookshelves give better enchantments?
No. The table counts at most 15, and level 30 is the highest option it can show.
