How to build an automatic sugar cane farm in Minecraft
Wait until the water reaches the end of the channel, then plant one Sugar Cane on each dirt block (layer 5).

Sugar Cane is a tall reed that grows next to water on sand, dirt or grass.
It can be composted: each one has a 50% chance to add a layer to a Composter.
Plant it on a block next to water and it rises by itself, three blocks at most. Break the top parts and leave the bottom to regrow. Cane crafts into Sugar and, three at a time, into Paper for books, maps and rockets.
