Fortune enchantment in Minecraft

Fortune increases what some blocks drop when you mine them. On ores that drop items, such as diamond, coal, emerald or raw iron, Fortune III gives about 2.2 times more on average. It goes on pickaxes, axes, shovels and hoes, and cannot be combined with Silk Touch.

What does Fortune do?

Raises the drops of ores, crops and some other blocks: more diamonds, coal, redstone, lapis, emeralds… Can't be combined with Silk Touch.

How much Fortune gives on ores

On most ores, each Fortune level adds a chance to multiply the drop. On average you get about 1.33 times the normal drop with Fortune I, 1.75 times with Fortune II and 2.2 times with Fortune III. Over a long mining session, Fortune III roughly doubles your diamonds.

Ores that already drop several items, such as lapis lazuli or redstone, follow their own formula but also gain a lot from Fortune.

Other blocks Fortune affects

Glowstone and melons drop more, up to a fixed maximum.
Gravel drops flint more often.
Leaves drop saplings, sticks and apples more often.
Some crops harvested with a Fortune hoe give more seeds or produce.

Blocks Fortune does not help

Ancient Debris always drops itself, so Fortune does nothing for netherite. Blocks that drop themselves, such as stone or logs, are not affected either.

Fortune or Silk Touch?

A pickaxe can carry only one of the two. Most players keep two pickaxes. Use a Fortune pickaxe for ores, and a Silk Touch pickaxe for glass, ice, bookshelves and ore blocks you want to place. A useful trick: mine ores with Silk Touch, carry them home, place them and break them again with Fortune.
