Sound IDs and categories

The sound is an ID such as minecraft:entity.player.levelup or minecraft:block.note_block.pling, and the autocomplete lists them all. A wrong ID is not refused, but nothing plays. The category after the ID decides which volume slider of Music & Sounds applies: master, music, record (Jukebox/Note Blocks), weather, block, hostile, neutral, player, ambient, voice or ui.

Volume, pitch and distance

A volume above 1 does not make the sound louder: it widens the distance at which players hear it. Pitch goes from 0 to 2, with 1 as the normal pitch. Players outside the range hear nothing unless you set minVolume, which gives them the sound at that volume. If no target can hear it, the game answers The sound is too far away to be heard. Without pos, the sound comes from where the command runs.

Useful combinations

Use /execute to play a sound at each player: execute as @a at @s run playsound ... @s ~ ~ ~. Cut a long sound with /stopsound, and pair sounds with /particle or /title for clear feedback. Sounds of a Note Block or a Jukebox belong to the record category.

Why do I hear nothing with /playsound?
