What you need
all free · links go to our pagesJEI (Just Enough Items) lists every item of your game, vanilla and modded, next to your inventory. Hover over an item and press R to see its recipes, or U to see where it is used. It is the fastest way to find how anything is made in a modpack.
Install JEI for your loader
For Minecraft 26.3, JEI 31.17 exists for Fabric and NeoForge. On Fabric it also needs Fabric API; on NeoForge it needs nothing else. Put the files in the mods folder, as shown in how to install Fabric. JEI runs on your side only, so it works on servers without them having it.
Open your inventory and search
Press E. The ingredient list fills the right side of the screen, with a search bar at the bottom. Type part of a name to filter the list: iron shows every item with "iron" in its name.
- Ctrl + F: jump into the search bar.
- Ctrl + O: hide or show the whole list.
- Right-click the search bar: clear it.
Show how an item is made
Hover over any item, in the JEI list or in your own inventory, and press R, or left-click it in the list. The recipe screen opens with one tab per method: crafting, smelting, smithing and every machine your mods add. Arrows at the top switch between recipes when there are several. Press Backspace to go back to the previous recipe you looked at.
Show what an item is used for
Hover over an item and press U, or right-click it in the list. JEI shows every recipe that uses it as an ingredient. This is how you find out what to do with a new ore or a strange drop from a mod.
Fill the crafting grid with the + button
Open a Crafting Table, look up a recipe and click the small + button next to it (Move Items). JEI moves the ingredients from your inventory into the grid. If something is missing, the button turns red and the tooltip lists the Missing Items. This button needs JEI on the server as well.
Search with prefixes
| Type | Searches | Example |
|---|---|---|
| @ | mod name | @create |
| # | tags | #logs |
| $ | tooltip text | $fire |
| % | creative inventory tab | %redstone |
| ^ | main colour | ^red |
| & | item ID | &minecraft:stone |
| - | excludes a word | wool -white |
| | | either word | gold|iron |
Careful with older guides: before JEI swapped them, # searched tooltips and $ searched tags.
Bookmark what you are working on
Hover over an item and press A to bookmark it. Bookmarks stay in a list on the left side, even after you restart the game, so the parts of a long crafting chain stay one click away. Press A again on a bookmark to remove it.
FAQ
Does the server need JEI?
No, JEI works from your side only. The one exception is the + button: moving ingredients into the grid needs JEI on the server too, otherwise JEI says the server must have it installed.
Why does # no longer search tooltips?
JEI swapped two prefixes. In the current version # searches tags and $ searches tooltip text. Many older guides still show the opposite.
How do I hide the item list?
Press Ctrl + O while an inventory is open. Press it again to bring the list back.
Can JEI give me items?
JEI has a cheat mode, off by default, that gives items directly. On a server it only works for players the server allows, usually operators.
