How to make banner designs in Minecraft: loom and patterns
Put a banner and a dye in a Loom, pick a pattern and take the result:

Banner is a tall flag of wool that you decorate with patterns, in 16 base colors.
It is made with the Crafting Table from 6 × White Wool and Stick (other recipes also exist). It is mined with an axe. As fuel it burns for 15 seconds in a Furnace, enough to smelt 1.5 items.
Six wool of one color and a Stick make a banner. At a Loom, add dyes and banner patterns to stack up to six layers of designs, and copy a finished banner onto a blank one of the same color.
Place it on the ground or on a wall, or put it on a Shield in the crafting grid. Use a map on a placed banner to mark it on that map, and wash the last layer off in a water cauldron.
6 × White Wool + Stick → White Banner
2 × White Banner → White Banner
