Stick item in Minecraft

Present since 1.0 or earlier Stack size: 64 In 7 tutorials ↓

The Stick is the most used crafting ingredient in the game: more than a hundred recipes need it, from the first Wooden Pickaxe to Torches, fences, ladders and signs. Two planks give four sticks, so you never run short.

It is made with the Crafting Table from 2 × Oak Planks (or another variant) (other recipes also exist). As fuel it burns for 5 seconds in a Furnace, enough to smelt 0.5 items.

What it does

Almost every tool and weapon has a stick as its handle, whatever the material of the head: wood, stone, copper, iron, gold or diamond. The same goes for the Bow, the Fishing Rod, the Arrow and the Brush. In building, sticks turn into fences, fence gates, Ladders and signs, and with coal or charcoal they make torches.

You can also get sticks without a crafting table: leaves sometimes drop one when they decay or are broken, and dead bushes drop a few. Two Bamboo pieces stacked vertically make one stick, which is handy in a jungle.

Sticks burn as a weak fuel, enough to smelt half an item each. A Fletcher at the novice level buys them in bulk for an emerald, an easy first trade if you have a tree farm.
