Rails connect on their own, Powered Rails push the cart when they are powered, and with you inside one powered rail every 32 blocks or so keeps the cart close to its top speed of 8 blocks per second. The physics below is the default one of Java Edition 26.3, read from the game code. Bedrock Edition carts accelerate and slow down differently, so test the spacing there. The Minecart Improvements experiment (with its "Minecart max speed" game rule) also changes everything below.
Craft rails and a minecart
| Item | Recipe | You get |
|---|---|---|
| Rail | 6 Iron Ingots, 1 Stick | 16 |
| Powered Rail | 6 Gold Ingots, 1 Stick, 1 Redstone Dust | 6 |
| Detector Rail | 6 Iron Ingots, 1 Stone Pressure Plate, 1 Redstone Dust | 6 |
| Activator Rail | 6 Iron Ingots, 2 Sticks, 1 Redstone Torch | 6 |
| Minecart | 5 Iron Ingots in a U shape | 1 |
Combine a Minecart with a Chest, a Hopper, a Furnace or TNT to get the matching cart.
Lay the track
Place Rails one after the other: each rail connects to its neighbors, turns at corners and climbs one block at a time on slopes. Powered, detector and activator rails only go straight: plan your corners with normal Rails. Short on iron? Abandoned mineshafts are full of rails.
For long trips, build the line in the Nether: one block there counts for 8 in the Overworld.
Power the powered rails
A Powered Rail only pushes when it is powered. Put a Redstone Torch on the ground right next to it, a Block of Redstone beside it, or a Lever. Power travels along a line of connected powered rails: the rail next to the source powers up to 8 more in each direction, so a single torch in the middle of 17 powered rails lights them all.
An unpowered Powered Rail is a brake: it halves the cart's speed every tick and stops it within a few blocks. Check that every rail on the line is lit before you ride.
Space them for full speed
A cart moves at most 0.4 blocks per tick: 8 blocks per second on land, 4 in water. With a passenger it loses only 0.3% of its speed per tick, an empty cart 4%, and a cart with a chest or a hopper 0.5% to 2% depending on how full it is. Calculated from the game's physics on flat ground:
| One powered rail every | With a player | Empty cart | Full chest cart |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 blocks | 8 blocks/s | about 7.4 blocks/s | 8 blocks/s |
| 8 blocks | 8 blocks/s | about 4.2 blocks/s | about 7.6 blocks/s |
| 16 blocks | 8 blocks/s | stops | about 4 blocks/s |
| 32 blocks | about 8 blocks/s | stops | stops |
| 50 blocks | about 6.4 blocks/s | stops | stops |
Slopes slow the cart down on the way up: on a climb, use powered rails for the whole slope.
Build a start and stop station
- End the line with a Powered Rail against a solid block.
- Put a Stone Button on that block.
- An arriving cart rolls onto the unpowered rail and stops.
- Get in and press the button: the rail gets power, pushes the cart away from the block and sends it down the line.
Build the same at the other end and you have a two-way line.
Detect carts and trigger things
- Detector Rail: sends a full signal (15) while a cart is on it. Use it to open a door, ring a bell or power the next powered rail only when a cart passes. A Redstone Comparator next to it reads how full a chest or hopper cart is.
- Activator Rail: when powered, it throws the rider out of a Minecart, lights a Minecart with TNT and switches a Minecart with Hopper off (it stops pulling items until it rolls over an unpowered Activator Rail).
A classic use: a powered Activator Rail in front of your base drops you off automatically at the end of the ride.
FAQ
How far apart should powered rails be?
With a player in the cart, about one every 32 blocks on flat ground keeps it near 8 blocks per second. Without a rider carts slow down faster: an empty cart needs one every 4 blocks, a full chest cart one every 8.
How many powered rails does one redstone torch power?
The rail next to the torch plus up to 8 more connected powered rails in each direction, so up to 17 in a straight line.
What is the top speed of a minecart?
0.4 blocks per tick, which is 8 blocks per second on land and half that in water, with the default physics of Java Edition.
Why does my cart stop on a powered rail?
The rail is not powered. An unpowered Powered Rail is a brake: it halves the cart's speed every tick and stops it.
