How to build an item sorter in Minecraft
Behind each barrel is a column of 3 hoppers, and behind that the redstone of the slice.

The Hopper moves items on its own: it pulls them from the container above it, picks up items dropped on top of it and pushes them into the container its spout points at. It is the basic building block of sorting systems and automatic farms.
It is made with the Crafting Table from Chest and 5 × Iron Ingot. It is mined with a pickaxe.
A Hopper holds five stacks and moves one item at a time, about 2.5 items per second. Its spout faces the block you clicked when placing it: point it down to fill a Chest or Furnace from above, or sideways to feed the side of a container. Chains of hoppers carry items across a base.
A redstone signal locks a Hopper: it stops pulling and pushing until the signal goes away. Combined with a Redstone Comparator, which reads how full a container is, this is how item sorters and overflow protections are built.
Placed under a furnace, it collects the finished products; placed on the side, it adds fuel. Under a Composter it collects the Bone Meal, under a Brewing Stand the finished potions, and it can feed a Crafter with ingredients. A Minecart with Hopper does the same job while moving on rails.
5 × Iron Ingot + Chest → Hopper
// Slots with several items cycle through every accepted option.
Behind each barrel is a column of 3 hoppers, and behind that the redstone of the slice.
The chest sits one block past the last plant, at the level of the hoppers.
An iron farm turns three trapped villagers and one zombie into a steady stream of iron golems, which a lava blade kills over a hopper.
the comparator reads the hopper, and the 15 blocks of dust drop the signal so that only a full hopper lights the lamp.

At the Crafting Table: 1 × Chest and 5 × Iron Ingot give 1 × Hopper. Mining the block drops it.
It collects dropped items and moves items between containers automatically, and redstone can lock it. It is an ingredient in one recipe: Minecart with Hopper.
The fastest tool is the pickaxe.
No: pistons cannot move it.
