Minecraft ore distribution: the best Y level for every ore
You need a Stone Pickaxe, a Copper Pickaxe or better; each ore drops 2–5 Raw Copper.

The Copper Pickaxe is a pickaxe, the mining tool for stone, ores and metal blocks. Its material decides which ores drop something when broken. Made from copper ingots, it mines the same ores as a stone pickaxe, but faster and for 190 uses. It works like every other pickaxe; the Iron Pickaxe page explains mining tiers and enchantments.
It is made with the Crafting Table from 2 × Stick and 3 × Copper Ingot.
3 × Copper Ingot + 2 × Stick → Copper Pickaxe
