Fire Protection enchantment in Minecraft
Fire Protection reduces damage from fire, lava, Magma Blocks and fireballs by 8% per level on each armor piece, and it shortens how long you keep burning. A piece can carry only one of the four protections, so Fire Protection replaces Protection on that piece.

Combine a Fire Protection book with the item on an anvil.

Commands
/enchant @s minecraft:fire_protection 4/give @s minecraft:enchanted_book[stored_enchantments={"minecraft:fire_protection":4}]One piece is often enough
All protection points from your armor add up, and enchantments stop at 20 points, which blocks 80% of the damage. Protection gives 1 point per level on every piece; Fire Protection gives 2 per level, but only against fire.
- Four pieces of Protection IV: 16 points, so 64% less fire damage.
- Three pieces of Protection IV and one of Fire Protection IV: 20 points against fire, the full 80%, and still 48% against everything else.
- Four pieces of Fire Protection IV: also 80% against fire, but nothing against mobs or falls.
The middle option is the usual compromise for players who spend a lot of time in the Nether.
Shorter burning
Each level also cuts the time you stay on fire by 15%, which matters after you step out of lava or get hit by a Blaze.
Fire Protection or Fire Resistance?
A Potion of Fire Resistance blocks fire and lava damage entirely while it lasts, so it is the tool for swimming in lava or fighting in a Nether Fortress. Fire Protection is your safety net when the potion runs out. The impact of a Ghast fireball counts as fire damage too, while its blast is covered by Blast Protection. For the full armor set, see the best chestplate enchantments page.

Fire Protection — FAQ
How many pieces of Fire Protection do you need?

Yes. Fire Protection can appear on the enchanting table for boots, chestplate, helmet and leggings.
What is the max level of Fire Protection?
Fire Protection goes up to level IV.
What is Fire Protection incompatible with?
Fire Protection can’t go on the same item as Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection.
