Feather Falling is not part of the protection family that excludes each other, so the best boots carry both. The game adds protection points from all your armor: Protection gives 1 point per level on every piece, Feather Falling gives 3 per level against falls, and the total stops at 20 points, or 80%.
Full Protection IV alone blocks 64% of fall damage. Add Feather Falling IV and you go over the cap: you take only a fifth of the damage, which turns most deadly falls into a scratch.
What counts as fall damage
- Ordinary falls, including landing badly after flying with Elytra.
- The damage you take when you teleport with an Ender Pearl.
- Falling onto Pointed Dripstone, which hurts far more than a normal landing.
Flying into a wall with Elytra is a different kind of damage, so Feather Falling does nothing there; Protection still helps.
It does not slow your fall
Feather Falling only reduces the damage when you land. To actually fall slowly, drink a Potion of Slow Falling, or land in water with a Water Bucket. Feather Falling fits next to Depth Strider or Soul Speed; the best boots enchantments page gives the full set.

Feather Falling — FAQ
Does Feather Falling stack with Protection?
Yes. Both add protection points against falls, up to the cap of 80%. Feather Falling IV with Protection IV on your armor reaches that cap.
Does Feather Falling protect you when you crash into a wall with Elytra?
No. Hitting a wall counts as a separate kind of damage. Only ordinary fall damage, Ender Pearl landings and Pointed Dripstone are covered.
Can Feather Falling stop all fall damage?
No. Enchantments can block at most 80% of the damage, so a very high fall can still kill you.
Can you get Feather Falling from an enchanting table?
Yes. Feather Falling can appear on the enchanting table for boots.
What is the max level of Feather Falling?
Feather Falling goes up to level IV.
