Commands
/enchant @s minecraft:protection 4/give @s minecraft:enchanted_book[stored_enchantments={"minecraft:protection":4}]How the reduction adds up
The game counts protection points from all your armor. Protection gives 1 point per level on each piece, and every point is worth 4% less damage. Four pieces of Protection IV give 16 points, or 64%. The total stops at 20 points, which is 80%.
The specialized protections give 2 points per level, but only against their own damage type: Blast Protection against explosions, Fire Protection against fire and lava, Projectile Protection against arrows and other projectiles. Feather Falling gives 3 points per level against fall damage, and it stacks with Protection because it goes on boots without excluding it.
Protection or a specialized one?
A piece of armor can carry only one of the four protections. For everyday play, Protection IV on every piece is the best choice because it covers mobs, falls, fire and explosions. Specialized sets make sense for one situation:
- Blast Protection for fighting the Wither or creepers.
- Fire Protection for long trips in the Nether.
- Projectile Protection against skeletons and pillagers.
What Protection does not stop
Damage from falling into the void and the /kill command ignore all protection.
