Respiration enchantment in Minecraft
Respiration lets you stay underwater longer: each level adds about 15 seconds of air on average, so Respiration III gives you roughly a minute instead of 15 seconds. It goes on helmets and has three levels.

Combine a Respiration book with the item on an anvil.

Respiration does not add air bubbles. Each time you would lose a bit of air, it gives you a chance not to: one in two at level I, two in three at level II, three in four at level III. That is why your bubbles drain unevenly and why the extra time is an average, not a fixed number.
The same chance still applies once your air is gone, so drowning damage comes less often too. That buys you a few more seconds to reach the surface.
What to combine it with
- A Turtle Shell gives you a short Water Breathing effect every time you dive in, and it can carry Respiration itself.
- A Potion of Water Breathing removes the need for air for as long as it lasts.
- A Conduit lets you breathe freely in the area around it.
Respiration is the permanent option: nothing to brew, nothing to build. Put Aqua Affinity on the same helmet to mine at full speed, and Depth Strider on your boots to move faster. That is the usual setup for raiding an Ocean Monument, where Guardians keep you busy. The best helmet enchantments page shows the complete set.

Respiration — FAQ
How long can you stay underwater with Respiration III?
About a minute on average before drowning starts, against 15 seconds without it. The exact time varies because each level works as a chance, not a fixed bonus.
Is Respiration better than a Potion of Water Breathing?
The potion is stronger while it lasts, since you need no air at all. Respiration is weaker but permanent, so most players use both: Respiration all the time, the potion for long dives.
Does Respiration work on a Turtle Shell?
Yes. The Turtle Shell is a helmet, so it takes Respiration, and its own Water Breathing effect adds to it.
Can you get Respiration from an enchanting table?
Yes. Respiration can appear on the enchanting table for helmet.
What is the max level of Respiration?
Respiration goes up to level III.
