Aqua Affinity enchantment in Minecraft

Aqua Affinity removes the mining penalty you get with your head underwater, so you break blocks at normal speed while submerged. It has a single level, goes on helmets and combines with every other helmet enchantment.

Why digging underwater is so slow

Two separate penalties stack when you mine in water. Having your head underwater makes you mine five times slower, and so does floating instead of standing on something. Aqua Affinity cancels only the first one. Stand on the seabed, or on a block you placed, and you dig at full speed; keep swimming and you stay slow.

The underwater kit

Aqua Affinity is the mining part of a set built for water:

  • Respiration on the same helmet gives you time before you run out of air.
  • Depth Strider on the boots lets you walk along the bottom at land speed.
  • Conduit Power, from a Conduit, adds breathing and faster mining around it.

With all of this, clearing out an Ocean Monument or digging a base under the sea becomes realistic instead of painful.

Is it worth it on an everyday helmet?

Yes. It excludes nothing, so it costs you only a slot on the anvil, and it pays off the first time you dig out a flooded cave. It also fits on a Turtle Shell. The best helmet enchantments page gives the full set with Protection and the cheapest anvil order.
