Blast Protection enchantment in Minecraft

Blast Protection reduces explosion damage by 8% per level on each armor piece and also reduces how far explosions knock you back. It covers creepers, TNT, End Crystals, firework blasts and beds or Respawn Anchors that explode. It cannot share a piece with the other protections.

How much you really need

Protection points from all your armor add up, and enchantments stop at 20 points, which blocks 80% of the damage. Protection gives 1 point per level on every piece; Blast Protection gives 2 per level, but only against explosions. So:

  • Full Protection IV already blocks 64% of explosion damage.
  • Swap one piece for Blast Protection IV and you reach the 80% cap against explosions, while keeping 48% against everything else.
  • A full Blast Protection set changes nothing more against explosions, and leaves you exposed to mobs and falls.

Less knockback

Each level also reduces the push of an explosion. With several pieces, a Creeper or a block of TNT barely moves you, which keeps you from being thrown into lava or off a ledge.

When a Blast Protection piece pays off

  • Fighting the Wither, whose skulls explode on impact.
  • Killing the Ender Dragon with beds, which explode outside the Overworld. A Respawn Anchor used outside the Nether explodes the same way.
  • PvP with End Crystals or crossbow Firework Rockets.

The other specialized options are Fire Protection and Projectile Protection. The best leggings enchantments page shows where the swap costs you least.

Blast Protection — FAQ

Is Blast Protection better than Protection?

Only against explosions. For everyday play, Protection on every piece is better; one piece of Blast Protection IV is enough to reach the 80% cap against explosions.

Does Blast Protection help with bed explosions against the Ender Dragon?

Yes. A bed that explodes outside the Overworld deals explosion damage, so Blast Protection reduces it.

Can you get Blast Protection from an enchanting table?

Yes. Blast Protection can appear on the enchanting table for boots, chestplate, helmet and leggings.

What is the max level of Blast Protection?

Blast Protection goes up to level IV.

What is Blast Protection incompatible with?

Blast Protection can’t go on the same item as Protection, Fire Protection and Projectile Protection.
