Minecraft 1.8.9 FAQ

When was Minecraft 1.8.9 released?

In December 2015. It is the final release of the Bountiful Update, which launched as 1.8 on 2 September 2014. The next version, 1.9, followed on 29 February 2016.

Which Java version does Minecraft 1.8.9 need?

Java 8. The official launcher runs 1.8.9 with its own Java 8 runtime.

Why is 1.8.9 still used for PvP?

Because combat in 1.8.9 has no attack cooldown. 1.9 added a cooldown between attacks, shields and the off-hand slot, which changed PvP. Many PvP players and servers stay on 1.8 combat, and Forge mods built for 1.8.9 keep the version alive.

Should I update from 1.8.8 to 1.8.9?

It is optional. 1.8.9 only fixes the Christmas chest texture and improves Realms, and it joins the same 1.8 servers.
