Minecraft 1.20.1 FAQ

When was Minecraft 1.20.1 released?

On 12 June 2023, five days after Java Edition 1.20 (7 June 2023). It is the hotfix for the Trails & Tales update and adds no new content.

Which Java version does Minecraft 1.20.1 need?

Java 17, the same as 1.20. The official launcher installs it automatically. Java 21 only became necessary with 1.20.5.

Why do so many players still use 1.20.1?

It contains all of Trails & Tales and is still a common target for Forge and Fabric mods and modpacks. A mod only loads on the game version it was built for, so a 1.20.1 modpack needs exactly 1.20.1.

Should I update from 1.20 to 1.20.1?

Yes. 1.20.1 only fixes bugs, including a crash and a softlock when joining servers, and does not change gameplay.
