WorldEdit edits thousands of blocks at once: select a box with the wand, then fill it, replace blocks inside it, copy it or repeat it with one command. Vanilla /fill refuses areas over 32,768 blocks by default (game rule max_block_modifications); WorldEdit has no such cap by default and lets you undo every step. It runs on Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition and Realms cannot load it.

Install the right WorldEdit file

For Minecraft 26.3, WorldEdit comes as two files from its official pages:

  • worldedit-mod (CurseForge or Modrinth) for single player or a modded server: the same file works with Fabric and NeoForge. Put it in the mods folder of your game or instance. On Fabric, WorldEdit does not need Fabric API.
  • worldedit-bukkit (Modrinth) for a Paper or Spigot server: put it in the server's plugins folder and restart.

New to loaders? Start with how to install Fabric or how to install NeoForge. In game, WorldEdit should then appear in the Mods menu.

Turn on cheats or get operator rights

In single player, WorldEdit only works in a world with cheats on. For a new world, switch Allow Cheats on in the Game tab of Create New World. For an existing world, open the game menu, choose Open to LAN and switch Allow Cheats on: this lasts until you leave the world.

On a Fabric or NeoForge server, only operators can use it. On Paper or Spigot, an operator has every WorldEdit permission; other players need permissions given by the server.

Select an area with the wand

//wand

This gives you a Wooden Axe. Left-click a block to set the first corner and right-click the opposite corner: the chat shows both positions and the number of blocks selected. The box is aligned to the world grid and includes both corner blocks.

  • //pos1 and //pos2 set a corner where you stand, handy while flying.
  • //hpos1 and //hpos2 set a corner on the block you look at, even far away.
  • //expand 10 up grows the selection by 10 blocks upwards; //size prints its size.
  • //drawsel draws the box in Creative mode, up to 48 × 48 × 48 blocks. For bigger boxes, the WorldEdit CUI mod (Fabric) draws the outline on your screen.

Fill, clear and replace blocks

Commands use the game's block IDs, the ones item tooltips show after F3 + H, without minecraft:.

//set stone_bricks
//replace stone_bricks mossy_stone_bricks
//walls oak_planks

//set air clears the box. //replace changes only the first block type into the second. //walls builds the four sides without floor or ceiling, and //faces glass covers all six faces. A list mixes blocks at random: //set 70%stone_bricks,30%cracked_stone_bricks gives a worn wall in one go.

Copy, rotate and paste a build

Select the build, stand where you want the reference point, then copy it:

//copy

WorldEdit remembers where you stood compared to the build. Walk to the new spot, stand at the same place relative to it and paste. If you copied while standing on the doorstep, the copy lands with its doorstep under your feet.

//rotate 90
//paste -a

//rotate 90 turns the copy a quarter turn clockwise before you paste, and //flip mirrors it towards where you look. The -a flag skips the air of the copy, so it does not dig a box into the terrain. //cut works like //copy but removes the original.

Repeat a section with //stack

Build one segment of a bridge, a wall or a row of columns, select it, look in the direction to extend and type:

//stack 8

The selection is repeated 8 times, each copy right after the previous one. Add a direction to choose it yourself: //stack 4 up builds four floors on top of the first. Look straight along an axis, not diagonally.

Make spheres, cylinders and pyramids

Shapes need no selection: they start from where you stand.

//hsphere glass 10
//hcyl stone_bricks 7 12

//hsphere makes a hollow sphere of radius 10 centred on the block where your feet are (add -r to put its bottom at your feet instead), and //sphere a solid one. //hcyl makes a hollow tower of radius 7 and 12 blocks high, from your feet upwards, and //cyl a solid one. //pyramid sandstone 10 gives 10 layers on a base twice as wide.

Undo a mistake

//undo

//undo cancels your last action, //undo 5 the last five, and //redo puts an action back. WorldEdit keeps your last 15 actions by default. It does not record side effects: water that starts flowing or torches and doors that pop off stay as they are, so check the area after a big edit.

Very large edits need memory: count about 1 GB for the game plus 2 GB for every 10 million blocks you change, and save a copy of the world before you start.

FAQ

Does WorldEdit work in Survival?

Yes, in a single player world with cheats on, since WorldEdit checks cheats and not the game mode. Blocks placed by a command cost nothing, so most players switch to Creative while they edit.

Does WorldEdit work on Bedrock Edition or Realms?

No. WorldEdit runs on Java Edition only, on your own game or on a server you control. Realms cannot load mods or plugins.

Why do my WorldEdit commands do nothing?

Check three things: cheats are on in single player (operator rights on a server), the file matches your Minecraft version and loader, and WorldEdit is listed in the Mods menu or the server log. Commands start with two slashes: //set, not /set.

How do I see my selection?

Type //drawsel in Creative mode to draw the outline of a box selection up to 48 × 48 × 48 blocks. For any size, install the WorldEdit CUI mod on Fabric.
