A Bedrock add-on is a set of packs: a behavior pack that changes how things work and, often, a resource pack that changes how they look. You import the file once, then activate it world by world. This guide covers Windows, Android and iOS; consoles only take Marketplace add-ons.

Pick the right file

Add-ons come in a few file types. All of them are ZIP archives with their own extension:

ExtensionWhat it holds
.mcaddonA full add-on: usually a behavior pack and its resource pack
.mcpackA single pack (behavior or resource)
.mcworldA whole world, packs included
.mctemplateA world template to start new worlds from

Download add-ons only from the Marketplace or from the creator's own page, and check which Bedrock version they were made for. A .jar file is a Java mod and does nothing in Bedrock Edition: for those, see how to install Fabric.

Import it into Minecraft

  • Windows: double-click the file. Minecraft opens and shows Import started..., then Successfully imported with the pack name.
  • Android: open the file from your downloads and choose Minecraft.
  • iOS and iPadOS: open the file in the Files app, use Share and pick Minecraft.

Duplicate pack detected means that version is already installed. If double-click does nothing on Windows, install it by hand: rename the file to .zip, extract it, and move each pack folder (the one that contains manifest.json) into behavior_packs or resource_packs, in the com.mojang folder. Paste this path in the address bar of File Explorer to open it: %appdata%\Minecraft Bedrock\Users\Shared\games\com.mojang

Activate it in a world

  1. Press Play, then either Create New World or the edit button of an existing world.
  2. Open Behavior Packs in the side menu.
  3. Under My Packs, select the add-on and press Activate. It moves to Active.
  4. Open Resource Packs and check that the matching pack is under Active too. Activate it if it is not.

Make a copy of an existing world before you add packs to it: removing an add-on later can leave broken blocks or items behind.

Turn on experiments only if the creator asks

Some add-ons use features still in development. Their page then tells you which toggle to switch on under Experiments in the world settings, most often Beta APIs. The game warns that experiments cannot be turned off after the world is created, so use a new world or a copy.

Read the achievements warning

If the packs or experiments you chose block achievements, the game shows: If you start playing with these settings, achievements will no longer be earnable in this world. Continue only if you accept that, because it cannot be undone for that world. Without this message, achievements stay on.

Order your packs and test

When two resource packs change the same thing, the one higher in the Active list wins. Move the add-on's resource pack above other packs if its textures do not show. Then load the world and check the new content: a block in the creative inventory, a new mob, a new recipe. If nothing changed, go back to the three usual causes: resource pack not active, experiment off, wrong version.

Add it to a Realm or a server

On a Realm, activate the packs on the world in the Realm settings, or upload a world that already has them. On a Bedrock Dedicated Server, copy each pack folder into the server's behavior_packs or resource_packs folder, then list it in world_behavior_packs.json (or world_resource_packs.json) in the world folder with the uuid and version from its manifest.json, and restart the server. Players get the resource packs when they join.

FAQ

Do add-ons work on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch?

Only add-ons from the Marketplace. Consoles have no way to open a .mcaddon or .mcpack file you downloaded.

Are Bedrock add-ons the same as Java mods?

No. Add-ons are behavior packs and resource packs read by Bedrock Edition. Java mods are .jar files that need a mod loader such as Fabric. Neither works on the other edition.

Do add-ons disable achievements?

They can. When a pack or an experiment you turn on blocks achievements, the game warns you before you start playing; if you continue, that world never earns achievements again.

Why does my add-on not work?

Most often the behavior pack is active but its resource pack is not, a required experiment is off, or the add-on was made for another version. Check all three in the world settings.
