How to change your skin in Minecraft (Java and Bedrock)
Pick a PNG, choose wide or slim arms, upload it in the launcher (Java) or the Dressing Room (Bedrock), then check it in game. Console limits included.

A skin is a PNG image wrapped around your character. On Java Edition you change it in the Minecraft Launcher, on Bedrock Edition in the Dressing Room. Either way you need the image file and the right arm width.
Get a skin file and check its arm width
Use a skin you drew in a skin editor or one you downloaded from a site you trust. The game's own 9 default skins (Steve, Alex, Ari, Efe, Kai, Makena, Noor, Sunny and Zuri) are 64 × 64 PNG files, and each one exists in both models:
| Model | Arm width | Default example |
|---|---|---|
| Wide (Classic) | 4 pixels | Steve |
| Slim | 3 pixels | Alex |
A skin is drawn for one model only. The editor or site you got it from tells you which one; if you are not sure, try both and keep the one without stripes on the arms. A PNG is only an image, so never run an installer or an .exe that claims to be a skin.
Upload it in the Java launcher
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open the Skins tab and add a new skin.
- Give it a name and choose the model: Classic for wide arms, Slim for slim arms.
- Click Browse, pick your PNG, then save and use it.
The launcher keeps your skins in a library, so you can switch back later in two clicks. The skin is tied to your account: you can also change it from your profile on minecraft.net, and it follows you on every PC.
Check it in game
Join a world or a server; if you were already playing, leave and join again. Press F5 (Toggle Perspective) to see yourself from the front. In Options > Skin Customization you can switch each outer layer on or off (Hat, Jacket, Left Sleeve, Right Sleeve, Left Pant Leg, Right Pant Leg) and your Cape. If the arms show stripes, go back to the launcher and switch between Classic and Slim. To pick a cape for your skin, see how to equip a cape.
Import it on Bedrock Edition
This works on Windows, Android and iOS, from the main menu only:
- Open the Dressing Room (hanger button).
- Go to Classic Skins in the side menu.
- Under Owned Skins, select the Import Skin slot, then Choose New Skin.
- Pick your PNG (64 × 32, 64 × 64 or 128 × 128).
- Choose the correct model type for your skin, wide or slim, and confirm.
An imported skin stays on that device: it does not sync to your other devices or games, so import it again on each one.
Use Marketplace skins on consoles
Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch have no file picker, so you cannot import your own PNG there. Your options are the default skins, skin packs from the Marketplace and the Character Creator in the Dressing Room, where you build a character piece by piece. Character Creator items and classic skins are two different systems: you cannot edit a classic skin piece by piece.
Make sure other players see it
On Bedrock Edition, players who turn on Only Allow Trusted Skins do not see players with custom skins, and some servers block imported skins. On Java Edition, other players see your skin after you rejoin; if a friend still sees the old one, they may need to reconnect too.
FAQ
What size does a Minecraft skin have to be?
Java Edition uses a 64 × 64 PNG (the old 64 × 32 layout still works). Bedrock Edition imports PNG files of 64 × 32, 64 × 64 or 128 × 128.
Can you change your skin while playing?
No. On Java, change it in the launcher and rejoin the world or server. On Bedrock, the game tells you to go back to the main menu to change it.
Why do my skin's arms have black or see-through stripes?
The arm width is wrong. A skin drawn for slim 3-pixel arms shows a gap on the wide model, and the opposite cuts off a column of pixels. Switch the model and save again.
Does a Java skin work on Bedrock?
The PNG layout is the same, so you can import the same file in the Bedrock Dressing Room. The two editions do not sync skins: set it on each side.
