Luck of the Sea enchantment in Minecraft

Luck of the Sea shifts your catches toward treasure and away from junk. At level III, about one catch in nine is treasure instead of one in twenty, and junk drops from one catch in ten to about one in twenty-five. It doesn't make you catch more, only better.

What counts as treasure

The treasure category holds Enchanted Books, enchanted bows and fishing rods, Name Tags, Saddles and Nautilus Shells. Fished books and rods are enchanted at a high level and can even carry Mending, which makes fishing one of the steadiest ways to find it without villagers.

Fish in open water

Treasure is only possible when your bobber sits in open water, with a good amount of water and air around it and no other blocks nearby. In a small pond or a cramped fish farm, the treasure category is simply skipped: Luck of the Sea then only trades junk for fish. If you want books and Name Tags, fish in a lake, a river or the ocean, away from the shore.

The fishing rod build

Luck of the Sea pairs with Lure, which makes fish bite sooner: more catches, each one better. Add Unbreaking and Mending so the rod lasts. The best fishing rod enchantments page gives the full set and the anvil order.

Luck of the Sea — FAQ

Does Luck of the Sea give you more fish?

No. It changes what you catch, not how often. More treasure and less junk, with about the same number of catches. Lure is the one that speeds up bites.

Why do I never fish treasure, even with Luck of the Sea?

Treasure requires open water around the bobber. In a small pond or a tight farm, the game skips the treasure category entirely.

Can you fish up Mending?

Yes. Enchanted books from fishing treasure can carry Mending, and Luck of the Sea makes them more frequent.

Can you get Luck of the Sea from an enchanting table?

Yes. Luck of the Sea can appear on the enchanting table for fishing rod.

What is the max level of Luck of the Sea?

Luck of the Sea goes up to level III.
