Fire Aspect enchantment in Minecraft

Fire Aspect sets the target on fire for 4 seconds per level, 8 seconds with Fire Aspect II, which keeps damaging it after each hit. Animals killed with it drop cooked meat, so it is as useful for food as for combat.

Cooked drops, even without the burn

The loot tables of food animals check two things: whether the mob is on fire, or whether the killer's weapon carries Fire Aspect. So a cow, a pig, a chicken, a sheep, a rabbit or a fish killed with a Fire Aspect weapon drops cooked meat such as steak, even if it died before catching fire. Add Looting for more of it, and you save the coal and the furnace time.

Where fire does nothing

Most Nether mobs are immune to fire: blazes, ghasts, magma cubes, wither skeletons and zombified piglins. Piglins and hoglins do burn. Water and rain also put the flames out quickly, so the burn is shorter in a storm or near a river.

The downside

A burning zombie can set you on fire when it hits back. It is a small risk, but keep a water bucket or Fire Protection in mind if you fight hordes with Fire Aspect.

Which weapons take it

Swords and spears get it from the enchanting table; the mace takes it through an anvil. An axe cannot carry it. Fire Aspect II is part of the recommended sword, spear and mace builds.

Fire Aspect — FAQ

Can you put Fire Aspect on an axe?

No. In survival, Fire Aspect only goes on swords, spears and the mace.

Does Fire Aspect cook meat if the animal does not burn?

Yes. The loot tables also check the killer's weapon, so a kill with a Fire Aspect weapon always gives cooked meat.

Is Fire Aspect useful in the Nether?

Not much. Blazes, ghasts, magma cubes, wither skeletons and zombified piglins ignore fire. Only piglins and hoglins burn.

Can you get Fire Aspect from an enchanting table?

Yes. Fire Aspect can appear on the enchanting table for spear and sword.

What is the max level of Fire Aspect?

Fire Aspect goes up to level II.
