Minecraft ore distribution: the best Y level for every ore
Iron Ore peaks at Y 16 (good from Y 8 to 24).

Iron Ore is common both in mountains and around Y 16 underground; mined with a stone pickaxe or better, it drops Raw Iron to smelt into ingots. Like every ore, it needs a pickaxe, and the enchantment on that pickaxe changes what it drops.
It is mined with a pickaxe (at least tier stone) and drops Raw Iron.
Ores are stone blocks with a resource embedded in them. Breaking one with a pickaxe of the right material gives that resource; with a weaker pickaxe, or by hand, it breaks for nothing. Wooden and golden pickaxes only handle coal, quartz and nether gold ore, stone and copper ones add iron, copper and lapis, and gold, redstone, diamond and emerald need at least iron.
Fortune raises the number of items an ore drops, which matters most for diamonds, emeralds, lapis and redstone. Silk Touch collects the ore block itself, so you can carry it home and decide later, or smelt it directly in a furnace.
Below the deepslate line, ores appear in their deepslate version: same drops, darker look, slower to mine. Ores that drop a finished item, like coal, diamond or lapis, also give experience when mined; iron, copper and gold ores drop raw metal to smelt instead.

Stone tools are faster, last longer and can mine Iron Ore and Copper Ore; a wooden pickaxe cannot.
Mined with Silk Touch, the block drops itself; without it, it drops Raw Iron.
It is mined with a pickaxe of the right tier to get its resource; Fortune multiplies the drop and Silk Touch keeps the block. It is an ingredient in one recipe: Iron Ingot.
The fastest tool is the pickaxe. It needs at least a stone pickaxe.
Placed under a Note Block, Iron Ore gives the Bass drum sound.
