Minecraft cape not showing? Every fix

A cape can be missing in two places: on your own screen, or for other players. The cause is different in each case, so start by checking what Mojang's servers send for your account.
Check your account with the cape checker
Type a Java Edition username to see the skin and the cape Mojang’s servers actually send to other players.
Only the cape currently equipped is public. Data from Mojang, through PlayerDB when Mojang’s API is unavailable, cached for 5 minutes.
If the checker shows no cape, the problem is on your account: the cape is owned but not equipped, or was never added. If it shows the right cape, your account is fine and the problem is in the game, the server or a mod.
Equip the cape on your account
Owning a cape does not equip it. Select it in the Skins tab of the Minecraft Launcher, on minecraft.net or in the Bedrock Dressing Room: how to equip or change your cape. Then check again with the tool above.
Turn the cape back on in the settings
In Java Edition, open Options, Skin Customization, and set Cape to ON. With OptiFine, also set Video Settings, Details, Show Capes to ON. Press F5 to see your back.
Find the cause by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause and fix |

| Checker shows no cape | Not equipped, or redeemed on another Microsoft account. Equip it, or redeem the code on the right account. |
| Missing only on one server | The server runs in offline mode or behind a proxy that does not forward skins. Everyone appears with default skins and no capes; only the server owner can change that. |
| Old cape still visible to others | Their game cached your previous skin. It updates when they reconnect. |
| Cape replaced by another design | A cape mod or client shows its own capes. Remove it or disable its cape feature. |
| Cape on Java but not Bedrock | Each edition has its own equipped cape, and some capes only exist on Java. |
| Cape gone from your account | A promotion cape is revoked after a refund of the related game. |
Know what mods and other clients change
OptiFine capes and capes from cape mods are separate systems: only players with the same mod can see them, and they never appear in the official cape list. OptiFine capes vs official capes explains the difference.

Why can I see my cape but my friends cannot?
They load your cape from Mojang. Offline-mode servers, some proxies and a few mods prevent that, even though your own game still shows it.
How long do cape changes take?
Usually under a minute, but other players may keep the old version until they reconnect.
My cape disappeared from my account. Why?
Promotion capes are revoked if you refund the game they came with, as with the Hero and Twisted capes for Minecraft Dungeons II.
