Tripwire block in Minecraft

Present since 1.3.1 or earlier

Tripwire is the block that String becomes when you place it. Stretched in a straight line between two Tripwire Hooks facing each other, it makes them send a redstone signal whenever something passes through.

What it does

Players, mobs, arrows and even dropped items trigger the wire, which makes it a cheap sensor for traps, doorbells, mob counters and farm triggers. The hooks must face each other on the same line, with only tripwire between them, and they can be placed quite far apart.

Breaking the wire by hand or with a tool triggers it and drops the string, which is how careless explorers set off the arrow traps of jungle temples. Cutting it with Shears removes it silently, without any signal.

Tripwire is almost invisible, a thin line just above the ground. Laid on its own, without hooks, it does nothing, but it still works as a discreet decoration.

Tripwire · FAQ

How do you get Tripwire in Minecraft?

Mining the block gives String, not the block itself.

What is Tripwire used for in Minecraft?

It links two tripwire hooks and makes them send a redstone signal when anything crosses it.

Can a piston move Tripwire?

No: when a piston pushes it, it breaks and drops as an item.
