Notch puts his Beverly Hills mansion up for sale at $70 million

Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft, is selling the house he bought in 2014 for exactly the same price. Since then he has added a recording studio and a nightclub.

Markus Persson, better known as Notch, the Swedish developer who created Minecraft, has put his Beverly Hills mansion on the market for $70 million. The listing became public at the end of October 2026, first reported by the Los Angeles Times, then picked up by much of the property press.

The house

The property is at 1181 North Hillcrest Road, in Trousdale Estates, a hillside neighbourhood of Beverly Hills where several billionaires own homes. What the listing includes:

  • about 22,300 square feet (around 2,070 m²) of living space, with 8 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms;
  • an infinity pool overlooking Los Angeles, a home cinema and a car lift to display vehicles;
  • a 2,500-bottle wine cellar and a candy room, valued at $200,000 when Persson bought the house;
  • two additions made by Persson himself: a recording studio and a private nightclub in the basement, with a bar, a DJ booth and a dance floor.

The sale is handled by Aaron Kirman and Katia De Los Reyes (Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California) with Branden and Rayni Williams (The Beverly Hills Estates).

Bought in 2014, just after the Microsoft deal

Persson founded Mojang in 2009 and released the full version of Minecraft in 2011. In September 2014, Microsoft announced it was buying Mojang for $2.5 billion, and Persson left the studio. That December, he bought this house from developer Bruce Makowsky, who had built it and listed it at $85 million. At $70 million, it was the highest price ever paid for a home in Beverly Hills at the time. Several reports say Persson outbid Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Twelve years later, the asking price has not moved. If the house sells at that level, it would be the most expensive sale in Beverly Hills in 2026 and the second in Los Angeles County this year, behind the $130 million paid in September for Casa Encantada, a Bel Air estate sold at a foreclosure auction.

Why he is selling

According to his agent, Persson simply spends little time in Los Angeles. On social media, some users linked the listing to a proposed one-time billionaire tax in California; the agent puts it down to how rarely his client is in the city.

Persson no longer has any role in Minecraft. In 2019, Mojang left him out of the game’s 10th anniversary celebrations after controversial posts on social media.
