Fire block in Minecraft
Fire is the burning block that appears on top of other blocks: lit with Flint and Steel or a fire charge, spread from lava or struck by lightning. It gives full light, hurts anything standing in it and spreads to nearby flammable blocks.
It gives off light level 15.
What it does
Fire on an ordinary block burns out after a while, and rain puts it out. On Netherrack or a magma block it burns forever, which makes netherrack the classic fireplace and the way to light a permanent beacon of flame. On soul sand or soul soil it becomes blue Soul Fire, which deals more damage.
Fire spreads to and destroys flammable blocks around it: wood, planks, leaves, wool, hay and many plants. That is why lava near wooden buildings is dangerous, and why a lightning storm can set a forest ablaze.
Standing in fire sets you burning; water, rain or a fire resistance potion stop the damage. Punching a fire block or placing water on it puts it out instantly. Fire is also what lights a Nether portal: a flame placed inside a finished obsidian frame opens it.
